רקע מדעי ומטרה:

The "second victim" refers to healthcare providers involved in adverse events, often experiencing emotional and professional consequences. This widespread phenomenon can lead to defensive practices, increased errors, and even staff turnover, ultimately impacting patient care and the healthcare system. This study aims to examine the prevalence, characteristics, and consequences of the “second victim” phenomenon among community-based medical and nursing staff.

שיטות:

A quantitative study using a self-administered online questionnaire, completed by 284 nurses and 81 primary care physicians. The research tool is the Second Victim Experience and Support Tool (SVEST), which was developed to help health organization policymakers understand the phenomenon within their institutions and evaluate the implementation and effectiveness of support programs for caregivers.

תוצאות:

Sixty percent of respondents were unfamiliar with the term “second victim.” Eighty five percent of nurses and 93% of physicians indicated that they had not received any organizational training on the subject and felt that the organizational attention given to the phenomenon was minimal to moderate. Among the respondents, 89.6% of nurses and 68.1% of physicians reported being involved in an adverse event. Of those, only 10% proactively sought mental health support within their organization to cope with the phenomenon.

מסקנות:

The findings highlight the prevalence and insufficient organizational awareness of the “second victim” phenomenon. Limited training and support underscore the need for targeted policies, proactive interventions, and comprehensive support programs to mitigate its impact and improve healthcare providers’ well-being and professional performance.
