רקע מדעי ומטרה:

Medical students experience moral distress in their clerkships resulting in burnout and decreased empathy. One approach to mitigate moral distress is reacting with moral courage – i.e., one's ability to act upon his moral values and speak-up in the face of wrongdoing. However, acting with moral courage is challenging. This study is a pilot testing an animated film to teach and discuss moral courage.

שיטות:

Qualitative, Immersion/Crystallization analysis of 15 medical students semi-structured interviews. During the interviews, an animated three scenes film was shown illustrating a moral dilemma and possible actions medical students can take. After a month a follow-up interview occurred. Vertical and horizontal analysis was used, focused on students' perceptions of moral dilemmas, moral courage, of using the film and its impact.

תוצאות:

Students found the animated scenario familiar and relevant. They felt emotionally engaged, feeling various emotions toward different participants within the film. The discussion during and following the film allowed them to share former experiences and thoughts relevant to moral courage; after a month students kept reflecting on the topics discussed. Using animation, voicing the text and the interviewer’s discussion while watching the film facilitated learning. The animation's limitations and inability to practice inhibited the ability to make a behavioral change.

מסקנות:

Showing an animated film facilitates a meaningful discussion on moral courage, allowing analysis and reflection on the challenging topic. Using animation integrated with discussions enables an effective learning process, including self-reflection and ideas toward action. Other modalities should be added to allow behavioral change.
